Episode #69: The paradox of choice
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
We hope this finds you well. Many of us enjoy an abundance of choices. We have the true gift of seemingly limitless choices in the smallest and largest of decisions in life. Technology is designed to maximize the number of choices that we have, but with an abundance of choices comes difficulty. With too many choices, we can become paralyzed and less satisfied with the outcomes of our decisions.
For those of us who have ever experienced overload with the number of choices in our lives, the book, The Paradox of Choice, may be a good encouragement for us. Author Barry Schwartz recommends that we create constraints at the front end of our decisions so that many of our choices are eliminated. In limiting our choices, we might decrease stress and increase the enjoyment of our decisions.
Schwartz recommends that we learn to love constraints. A practical tip is to define our criteria ahead of time for our decisions. This does not mean we have to settle for mediocrity. Rather, based on our values, we define a high standard ahead of making decisions in order to intentionally limit our choices. This process puts our choices into two buckets: either our choice fits our criteria or it doesn’t fit our criteria. The paradox of choice is that it is in creating boundaries and limiting our choices that our best and most enjoyable outcomes can occur. The Paradox of Choice
