Episode #67: Mind Like Water
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
Author David Allen’s expression, “mind like water,” means a mental and emotional state in which our head is clear and we are able to create and respond freely, unencumbered with distractions. Sounds nice doesn’t it? Also, kind of sounds like a mythical creature! We find it increasingly hard to have a “mind like water”… and we want to help.
Each of us have insanely “full” lives with to-do lists a mile long. Simply adding a new task to our to-do list doesn’t actually mean it will get done or we will have a “mind like water”.
What if we could get out in front of our to-dos at work and at home, always know what’s on our plate, and even have a little time to think about how we can work smarter? A first step we recommend to this end is incorporating a weekly review into your schedule.
A good weekly review helps us do three things: get clear, get current, and get creative. To “get clear,” we allocate time to collect all the items in our physical and digital inbox. First, we sort through all loose papers and materials. Second, we get our Inbox to zero and empty our head by writing down all the things occupying our mental bandwidth. To “get current,” we review all our projects and action lists. If we don’t have a project list, now is a great time to start one! We then review our past and upcoming calendar. Once we are clear and current, it is now time to “get creative”. This means taking time to get out in front of our life, instead of sitting in the passenger seat. Interested in starting your own weekly review? The next step is to set it on your calendar! Friday at 5pm, Tuesday at 6am, or Sunday at 8pm…you choose, but schedule it. For much more detail, here is a guided review and outline of a weekly review. We hope it helps you foster your own “mind like water.”
One item to add to your project list: bring a friend to Craftwork. When you bring a friend who has never been to a Craftwork, we will give them a free drink of their choice (from our basics menu). (Honor code on bringing a friend new to Craftwork. Limit of 1 free drink per customer. Offer expires 9/23/19.)
