Episode #105: Beating Your Personal Average
The “what” is easy. Craftwork is a specialty coffee shop and vibrant membership-based workspace with locations in Fort Worth (Foundry, Camp Bowie, Magnolia) and Austin (Domain). We serve craft coffee and are a connected coworking space. But you knew that already. Our “why” is our heart – we desire to create spaces and places where our members and customers experience connection and community.
We hope this finds you well.
Personal challenges are inevitable. According to wheelchair athlete Dean Furness, the key to overcome them is to beat your personal averages.
In a recent TedTalk, Furness spoke about the challenges he’s faced that have brought him to where he is today. Furness suffered a spinal injury in 2011 that left him paralyzed from his chest down. Since then, he’s competed in multiple marathons and has beaten his personal average countless times.
Beating Your Personal Average: Furness realized that he had to “focus on who [he] was at that point in time with where [he] needed to go to get back to who [he] needed to be.”
Furness says there was no lack of bad days, but that his good and bad days were defined by his personal average and what he knew he was capable of at that point in time. During this journey, Furness decided to start competing in marathons, and once he did, he did not stop. He worked on beating his averages and becoming better. Furness has now competed multiple times in both the Chicago and Boston marathons and has beaten his previous race’s average.
One of our Core Values at Craftwork is kaizen (continuous improvement). We believe to get to the best version of ourselves, we must improve incrementally over time. When we focus on beating our personal averages little by little, we will overcome the personal challenges we face.
Which personal average will you set out to beat this week, friends?
Gift: To help you beat your personal average goal, we made a Personal Average Tracker you can print and use for accountability. We’d love to hear about your progress.
